SOOTHE ~ Befriend your Body

Almost every single person I have met with a chronic illness of any kind, has at some stage felt like their body is working against them, like their body has let them down.

Once I became aware that I felt this way, I acted on it.

First, I realised and also decided that this was not true at all.

Contrarily, my body is amazing.

It is always doing its best for me.

It is always trying to do what it needs to do to get back to its and our natural state of healthy homeostasis.

My job is to support it to do just that.

Second, I realised that I owed my body one big fat apology.

I started a daily dialogue with my body and here is my first entry, a letter of apology and intention.

Dear Body,

I am so, so sorry. I am sorry for the many times that I haven’t listened to you.

I am so sorry for the many times I consciously chose to ignore you. To ignore that you were tired, that you were tired, that you were thirsty, that you were hungry, that you had needs.

I am so sorry for the times I overrode you and kept running, or overrode you and didn’t rest, pushed you harder than you wanted to go. I am so very, very sorry.

I am so sorry for the times I berated you and judged you; the times that I felt you weren’t enough.

I am so sorry for the times I got frustrated at you, angry at you.

I am so sorry that I wasn’t there for you; that I didn’t have your back; that I wasn’t kind, that I wasn’t compassionate; that I wasn’t loving.

I am so sorry for the times that I didn’t treat you like you were my best friend which you clearly are.

I am so grateful for you, that you hung in there, that you stuck with me. That you constantly, relentlessly, unconditionally supported me and our life together.

I am so grateful for your strength, for your wisdom and your deep care and love for me.

You are so amazing. You do so many things for me that I don’t even think about; that I don’t pay attention to and that I don’t appreciate you for.

You heal scratches without any input from me. You digest and process food without any input from me. You house this crazy brain of mine and look after me with infinite care.

You fight off flu’s and colds and infections. You heal inner wounds. And I am so, so sorry that I didn’t listen to you, respond to you and look after you the way a best friend does.

From this moment on, I commit to showing up for you. I commit to showing up for you and with you with love, acceptance, appreciation and gratitude.

I commit to listening to you better; responding to you.

From this moment on I commit to being your best friend, your equal partner.

You are going to know this, because you will hear the kind and loving words that I say; you‘ll hear me express my gratitude and my thanks. You will hear compliments of appreciation and encouragement.

You will see me looking at you in the mirror with love and respect, with kindness and compassion. You will see me looking at you with admiration, amazement and awe.

You will feel a loving touch. You will feel well moved and well rested.

You will feel nourished. You will feel the sun on your face and the earth beneath your feet.

You will feel well hydrated and satisfied with nourishing food.

You won’t feel overfull or under full.

You will feel heard, listened to and responded to.

You will smell natural products. You will smell the delicious smell of nature’s bounty. You will inhale fresh air and you will know, with every cell of our being, that I love you, that I appreciate you and that I am doing my best for you as you have done for me, as many moments as possible.

I love you.

I appreciate you.

And I am so grateful for you.

Thankyou.

Expectations are grand things. They have a tendency to set us up for disappointment and perceived failure when we don’t meet them.
